As women, we have been invited to several seminars and training on matters; Women Empowerment, Right?  We all agree that these are very crucial especially in this day and age, I believe that more can be done to ensure that women and girls have a sustainable way of keeping themselves empowered even without these curated events and activities. Self-Empowerment is a continuous process, it never stops because only then will we be able to positively impact the world around us and be the best versions of ourselves as women. Here are 5 simple ways that can help you stay empowered.

1.Keep learning

We have all heard of the quote “knowledge is power” as cliche as it may sound, it is very important for us to keep getting educated about things we care about, and things we do not know. Knowledge gives you the confidence which gives you the power that not only keeps you well informed but also gets you talking from a point of awareness and that is empowerment. When you are eager to learn new things not only does it build your imagination but it also stimulates your level of creativity and it broadens your worldview on crucial issues. So look for books, blogs and podcasts that talk about the thing you are passionate about and things you want to learn so you can stay knowledgeable.

  1. Get Mentors

Find someone who you hold in high regard, whose works or words greatly affect you in your specific area of interest or expertise, and that can guide you and speak on your behalf. The importance of a mentor is also emphasised by John C. Maxwell who concurs  “One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.” We have all heard the phrase, Been there done that; meaning that they have learnt as they made mistakes in their life’s journey, they know better and one can learn a great deal from them. When looking for mentors, approach it like you would friendships, do not ask people that do not know you that well if they would be your mentors, rather find people who you admire that you are already working with and seek advice from them. Let them know that you think highly of their opinion, this will slowly build a relationship that can turn into mentorship. You have to also put to use all the advice they give you.

3 Network

“Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.” -Michele Jennae.

When you attend social events, make sure you meet and talk to new people. People that can help you get to the next level. Before, you attend any social event, make sure you do your research well about who will be in the event. You can google the speakers and see what they have done before, this will be a simple and quick way to approach them. When you meet people talk about what you have done, and what you are planning to do and ways in which you can exchange ideas with other people in the event. If you manage to exchange contacts, always reach out to them in a polite and professional way, reminding them why it is important for you two to stay in touch.

  1. Believe in Your Dreams

If you can dream it, you can do it.” The famous words of  Walt Disney .You have to believe in yourself with all your heart and strength. Also, remember that believing in your dreams is not enough, since most people might also have the same dream as you, the only difference is some are dreaming it harder by actualizing it. This can be done by writing down a plan, taking to your mentors about it, or in networking events, then take a risk and work on it. Everything begins in the heart and mind. Every great achievement began in the mind of one person. They dared to dream, to believe that it was possible. Take some time to allow yourself to ask “What if?” Think big and dream even bigger. All our dreams are valid, just keep at it.

  1. Take Risks

Always step out of your comfort zone as scary as it may seem. Remember that every great thing you want is on the other side of fear and just dare to take a leap of faith. Fear is a feeling and not a fact by the way, so it is okay to be afraid. Most of the time we are afraid to lose we forget that the whole process of taking the risks is the process, and sometimes we do not succeed and that is okay too. The whole process in itself forces us to confront our fears, this also builds true character and resilience. You will be amazed at what you can achieve if only dare yourself to try you.
